  • Avoiding Rookie Mistakes:
  • Check to make sure your horizon is not crooked.

  • Check to make sure you haven’t inadvertently included someone or something distracting in the edge of your frame.

  • Use a lens hood to avoid lens flare.

  • Don’t place the horizon and other photographic subjects dead center. Most experts recommend the “rule of thirds” (imagine your frame is divided into horizontal and vertical thirds- then place important objects at the intersection of those imaginary lines).Let me editorialize here if I may. It seems to me that now that everyone follows the rule of thirds ,instead of boring central placement we now have monotonous rule of thirds placement. I’d say compose your picture to give the best result in your own judgment , keeping in mind that asymmetry and variety often make for better shots.
