The Sonoran Desert National Monument, one of Arizona’s newly designated national monuments, about 60 miles south of Phoenix is quite easy to access. You can drive directly into the monument by taking State highway 238, or simply exit Interstate 8 at the Vekol (144) exit or the Freeman (140) exit. Nevertheless, this is real wilderness. Be advised to stay on the designated roads, bring plenty of water, and consider contacting the Bureau of Land Management prior to your visit.
