| Well while we’re on the subject of good references in addition to Nature Photography, you can check out Outdoor Photography by Boyd Norton this book is more helpful if you already have a good basic understanding of photographic techniques. The Creative Photography Handbook by Lee Frost is helpful to beginners as well as more advanced photographers- it is also simpler and easier to read than the book by Shaw. Back to lighting- Light will transform your photo from ordinary to extraordinary. So look for beautiful light. The easiest way to find great light is to shoot near sunrise and sunset when the light transforms literally everything. That being said, we don’t subscribe to the theory that the rest of day is for napping and not photography. It is more difficult to get good light at other times but I think we’ve all seen beautiful images around us at times other than sunrise and sunset. At Antelope Canyon midday produces the best light in the canyon. An overcast day may be great for shooting vegetation due to the soft diffused quality of light. Who hasn’t looked at a stormy sky and wondered at its beauty? So look for fantastic light and you just may get a fantastic photo.
