More on upper antelope canyon and lower antelope canyon:

Antelope canyon ( divided into upper antelope canyon and lower antelope canyon ) is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful areas in not only Arizona but the entire southwest. Photographers are drawn to the southwestern slot canyons because of their unmatched colors and light. The antelope canyon slots are jewels among the hundreds of slot canyons found in the desert southwest. Both upper and lower antelope canyon are easy to access. However you must plan ahead if you would like to visit either one of the antelope canyons. The canyons are located on Navajo lands and permits are required for entry. We have provided links to resources which can help you arrange a tour or an individual permit for entry into antelope canyon .

Entry into upper and lower antelope canyon is closely regulated. This is partly to preserve it’s beauty and dignity and partly for safety reasons. The canyon is generally dry but is subject to flash flooding. Tragically, such a flood took the lives of a group of explorers in Lower Antelope Canyon in 1997. For this reason it is critical , whether you are touring the slot canyons alone or with a guide, to be aware of the weather conditions at the time of your trip. If conditions are unsafe, entry to either upper and or lower antelope canyon may be denied.

Upper antelope canyon is also known as corkscrew canyon or sometimes individuals simply refer to it as Slot Canyon as if it is the only one in existence. It draws so many visitors during the “season” , April through September that is difficult to negotiate your way through the narrow canyon amongst all the other visitors and especially photographers. Still, the light show in upper antelope canyon is an experience not to be missed. If you do want to photograph it you will need a tripod and a camera capable of making long exposures in order to capture the beautiful colors and the famous antelope canyon “spotlights”. The high narrow walls make midday the best time for photography, but even at high noon the canyon is too dim for short exposures.

While upper antelope canyon is easy to access and negotiate, Lower antelope canyon requires a spirit of adventure and a higher level of fitness. You will need to climb down into lower antelope canyon, rather than walking in on level ground. Once inside this is a true hiking and climbing experience so be prepared with proper gear. Some people find the colors and shapes of lower antelope canyon even more compelling than that of upper antelope canyon. Both trips should not disappoint . Remember that climbing in to lower antelope canyon means climbing OUT of lower antelope canyon. If rain is in the forecast at all you would be best advised to reschedule your visit. Although many new safety measures, including nets and ladders have been added since the 1997 tragedy, there is still no safe way to explore these magnificent slot canyons in the rain. You simply cannot get out of lower antelope canyon quickly. Again, both upper and lower antelope canyon should be closed to the public during unsafe weather and numerous other safe guards are in place. Be aware of the issues that are involved in visiting these remarkable natural wonders but don’t be dissuaded from making the trip. These canyons are among the most remarkable of nature’s wonders.
